Acer nigrum

A native tall tree with a straight central trunk in the forest and a widely spreading branch system in the open. Yellow to orange-red fall foliage.

Black maple, once considered a separate species (Acer nigrum), is now considered a subspecies of sugar maple (Acer saccharum ssp. nigrum). It displays similar characteristics of a dense, rounded crown; dark, furrowed bark, and brilliant fall color. The tree can be tapped to make maple syrup.
